Customer service was brilliant throughout our dealings with spaceship. We had to change our travelling plans due to unforeseen circumstances, and Sophie from head office in Sydney was particularly helpful and understanding, something which we greatly appreciated under the circumstances! If we get the opportunity to come back and do the travelling we had intended, we’ll definitely go with spaceship!

Picked up our Spaceships Beta in Brisbane and dropped it off in Cairns. No charges for one way travel which is brilliant. The Brisbane depot was easy and super fast when picking up the camper which meant that no time was wasted in the day. I also rearranged (on short notice) for an earlier time and that was no problem at all. I did this online and it was confirmed in no time. The camper itself was clean, worked perfectly for our entire trip up to Cairns, was well stocked with everything we needed and was more importantly… reliable! We really enjoyed our experience. The bonus of unlimited kilometres compared to other companies let us explore at our own pace anywhere we felt like. We also booked the ‘no stress’ insurance and that just gave us that extra piece of mind. Luckily we didn’t have to use it but it’s not that expensive in the grand scheme of things and definitely worth it. We dropped off the camper at the Cairns depot and the experience here was equally fantastic. Very smooth and easy. The camper was checked by a friendly Spaceships employee and he asked if we needed help with a taxi or any way back to our accommodation. I think Spaceships as a company have tried to think about making the rental experience as easy and relaxed as possible. I’d definitely book again.

If you plan to travel simple and experience a lot, this is your choice. My van was Alpha 1, meaning it was older and that was made clear at the reservation. Everything was in good working order and the van was clean. It’s worth booking some extras, like the extension cord, table and chairs and mosquito nets. The pickup and drop off not problematic. Make sure you take some extra time before drop off, as you have to clean and wash the van.

We rented a van here for a month in 2016. Had great time, but the service (and vans) at Spaceships NZ was a bit better. Also 12V battery died in the first week. We were reimbursed but a bit of a hassle of course.

I probably ended up here because you didn't book early enough (like me)... Not sure where to start, but you'll basically be paying around $160 per day for a 200.000km+++ imported people mover (Toyota Estima) from Japan, with very minimal adaptations to the campervan purpose. (They can also be found used on AutoTrader for around AUD 10.000) Don't expect any kind of amenities - it's a very basic storage structure working as a bed platform, with a small fridge squeezed in the back together with tent-camping gear. The interior space is minimal. The tent on the top was terribly dirty.. Because it's a Toyota, it will still run (on petrol, with poor MPG since it's a heavy loaded automatic petrol engine), but that's it.

We took out 'Start Dust' (the name of our rental Alpha) for 5 days to Port Stephen - it's our first campervan trip ever. Our first impression, when we picked up the vehicle was that the van is really old, in fact it has around 540,000 kms on it, an oldest vehicle we had ever driven! However, it wasn't skip a beat through out the trip - totally reliable like a trusty old dog :) The Alpha has a very basic living set-up, all made by plywood and metal frames but it worked extremely well for us. The bed is surprisingly comfortable, the tent design is brilliant with lots of air flow during the night and it was able to withstand rain and wind - but to be honest it was very noisy in the wind and the curtains were not even to block out all the lights which were some what expected - so bring sleeping mask and ear plugs. The fridge was surprisingly good, you could keep an ice-cream there on the max setting. We spent all the nights inside caravan parks as parking overnight on the street is not allowed in Port Stephens (and most urban areas in Australia). Caravan park is well suit the small campervan like the Alpha as a caravan park usually has toilets and showers, shared kitchen facilities etc. So what is lack on the Alpha is well provided in a caravan park. The staffs at Spaceship Sydney were all friendly and helpful, the deposit refund process was smooth and as expected (the deposit was $3000). Overall experience was very positive and we are happy, just have to deducted 1 star due to the age and condition of the vehicle - it is clean but extremely old, rattling noises, vibration and occasional engine smell spoilted many nice drive. Upon the return of the vehicle I've seen the new fleet of vehicles and they are looking great. We've heard the all the really old vehicles (like Star Dust) will soon be retired. So the future looks bright for Spaceship Sydney. Looking forward to our trip across Australia next year with spaceship, next time we won't mind upgrading to the Beta, we think it's a money well spent for those experiences that only the campervan can give you.

Just picked up our van today, there was a slight mix up and Peter was super helpful! Even popped in some extras for us and showed us around everything in the van thoroughly, very excited for our trip!!
